Cherkasy: The nature turned back its property

With the assistance of The Green Party of Ukraine the water area of the Dnipro river was returned to the communal property of the Cherkasy region.

Cherkasy City Council members, during the last session, after voting, returned the water area of the Dnipro river into the municipal ownership. The area of land, which is approximately 59 hectares, was rented by «Kyivcitybuild – 1» for 49 years. The company planned to build houses there. In 59 hectares of the area only 9 – coastal sand, and the remaining territory – waters of Dnipro. The plan was to bring sand there artificially.

Understanding the whole thereat of the situation, Cherkasy organization of The Green Party of Ukraine is constantly and persistently warned developers and the administration about the danger of interference in the natural ecosystem, as well as about the effects of artificial activities: as long as Dnipro is the main corridor of the national ecological water system, it will cause fatal problems for the whole country.  

In the world there are a limited number of rivers such as Dnipro, which have such a great vital importance for the country. Scientists around the world predict that in 30 - 40 years the most valuable resourse on the planet will be water.

Through ignorance and carelessness of entrepreneurs the Dnipro basin formed a powerful territorial-industrial complex, which causes to many environmental problems already nowadays. E.g.: the natural landscapes of the river has already changed in the worse way, Dnipro banks suffer due to erosion, floodplain meadows turn into alluvial sandy deserts, etc.
We all know, that waters of Dnipro consumes more than half Ukrainians. Violation of the ecological state of the Dnipro river due to leakage is definitely a terrible threat to the health of the whole nation. 

The Green Party of Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to city authorities demanding to turn away this environmentally hazardous business. For two and a half years of negotiations with «Kyivcitybuild – 1», the needed results have been achieved. The land was left by the company and given back to the city council property.

The Green Party of Ukraine hopes that this decision will be persuasive example for other developers, who must always reckon with nature and its invaluable resources in any business and activities.
