Tatiana Kondratiuk: We have to remember a tragic past and to protect our future from further nuclear accidents

The Chernobyl tragedy that occurred 24 years ago, still recalls with terrible echoes to all humanity. This was stated by Tatiana Kondratiuk, the Head of the Green Party of Ukraine.

She said that today in Ukraine there are about 2 million 300 thousand people affected by the Chernobyl disaster. The main diseases associated with the consequences of the Chernobyl accident are: oncological, blood circulatory and nervous system diseases, and children are suffering from oncopathology and congenital malformations.

«According to data of Ministry of Health, morbidity only thyroid cancer in 33 times higher nowadays, than before the catastrophe. The most terrible thing is that children and adolescents are mostly vulnerable to these diseases. In addition, today the level of illnesses among healthy people - the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident - has increased in 16 times» - the Head of the Green Party of Ukraine added.

«We need to reflect seriously on whatever may cause the use of nuclear energy. Ukrainians, as no one else felt the danger and consequences of the usage of the peaceful atom».

«And today, when, unfortunately, public policy is formulated on the basis of a full nuclear cycle in Ukraine, for example plans of construction of the plant to produce nuclear fuel for atomic power stations, building new nuclear reactors, and finally the nuclear burial ground in the Chernobyl zone we would like to ask if our politicians forgot what Ukraine had gone through? This tragic Chernobyl disaster didn’t teach us anything?».

«We, the Green Party of Ukraine believe that our country should gradually abandon nuclear power and develop alternative energy sources that are safe for people and the environment.

Today, on April 26 at 20.00, in memory of the catastrophe all of us had 24 years ago, we’ll lay out the huge sign of the «nuclear threat» with candles as a sign of danger to life of millions of people from using nuclear power. We welcome all people, who care about their future, to come to St. Michael's Square and to support action. We remember the past for our future» - said Tatiana Kondratiuk.
